Jenna asked me how I felt about Katara, and there was so much that goes into my answer that I had to make my own separate post with an accompanying half-assed graphic. You’re welcome!
How do I feel about Katara?
Long answer:
Katara means a great deal to me. When I started watching the show, I was the exact same age as Katara was. I identified with her a great deal. Sure, I’ll probably never have to stop a war or save the world, but that doesn’t mean the challenges she faced weren’t relatable.
Seeing both acknowledged sexism, and a girl calling out that sexism in Avatar was amazing. Basically, seeing Katara call out people’s bullshit regarding her gender made me feel less alone and gave me courage to fight the same fight. Her fight with Pakku still gives me chills. Her strength and her unwillingness to just take her society’s nonsense about her gender was very inspiring.
Her compassion also spoke to me a lot. She was willing to throw away a lot of her life for a kid she barely knew, and while she wouldn’t and didn’t do the same for every person that crossed her back, she was always eager and willing to do whatever she could to help those she encountered in her life. Even if her attempts didn’t always work quite like she wanted, she still tried to make things better for others. She even offered to heal Iroh, who was still essentially her enemy at the time, when Azula shot him. And she forgave Zuko, for god’s sake! You know, the guy who tracked her and her friends all across the globe, captured and interrogated her, attacked her villiage, and contributed to the (brief) death of the person she was in love with? If that’s not compassion I don’t know what is.
And oh god I can’t talk about Katara without talking about Kataang. Her relationship with Aang is so beautiful I almost can’t handle it. They rely on each other, they draw strength from one another, and it’s glorious. They are the respective heart and soul of the show. That’s how close they are! Even if Aang is the main character, you just wouldn’t have ATLA without Katara.
The hate the fandom gives her just infuriates me. Although I’m sure they exist, I have yet to hear a legitimate reason for people to hate Katara. It’s all misogynistic bullshit with no sense or purpose. I might go into the absurdities of the reasons why people hate her another time, but not on this post.
Short answer:
Fuck you, she’s awesome.
If you ship with with Aang or Zuko or anybody else this I think is true for many of us and haters are always going to hate. Like Toph and other women in this show she can kick ass, but she is also very very different from them in character too and you can tell in the future she’ll probably be a fantastic mother too.

In the second she’s standing perpendicular to us but looking to her side wearing a determined but angry expression. The third it is clearly from the ‘Year of Hell’ and she is sitting in the command chair and bracing for impact. The fourth shows her, frustrated and holding her left hand up as if to ward off something Seven is about to say with Seven of Nine standing next to her in a starfleet science uniform and looking curious. The fifth has Janeway dressed up as Queen Arachnia with Doctor Chaotica kneeling at her feet and is looking down on him in disdain. The final image is from the last episode of the show, and has two Janeways with the elder one savouring her coffee and the younger one, from our time, looking on her not too fondly. 30 Days of TV Female Awesome - Day 1: Favorite Female
This really was a no-brainer for me. Kathryn Janeway was the first women on TV that I remember looking to and wanting to emulate. Kathryn Janeway was (and still is to a certain extent) who I want to be when I grow up. She was the first female captain of a Star Trek series, and I think she may have had the hardest task: guiding her ship home from the Delta Quadrant, an expected 70 year trip. Never did she doubt that they would make it home, always telling her crew it wasn’t an if, it was a when. She took on the Borg more times than any other captain, kicking ass and taking names on a regular basis. She was a source of strength for her entire crew, never willing to call it quits and give up. I loved that strength about her, but I also loved her incredible warmth and genuine respect for her crew, her humor, her unwillingness to tolerate bullshit. Plus, if I want to be superficial, Kate Mulgrew is absolutely gorgeous, and it’s understandable why she had chemistry with characters ranging from Chakotay to the Borg Queen (I kid you not, just watch Endgame if you don’t believe me).](http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_leqqibrpIP1qdkmxoo1_1280.jpg)

“Outraged? I’m barely surprised. This is a country where women aren’t allowed to drive a car. They’re not allowed to be in the company of any man other than a close relative; they’re required to adhere to a dress code that would make the Maryknoll Nun look like Malibu Barbie. They beheaded 121 people last year for robbery, rape, and drug trafficking; they’ve no free press, no elected government, no political parties; and the royal family allows the religious police to travel in groups of six, carrying nightsticks, and they freely and publicly beat women. But ‘Brutus is an honorable man.’ Seventeen schoolgirls were forced to burn alive because they weren’t wearing the proper clothing. Am I outraged? No, Steve. No, Chris. No, Mark. Detective Kate Beckett. Brilliant cop, in charge of her team, she’s determined and smart and wont take much crap but has a sense of humour too. She doesn’t shy from dressing up or going out if she wants to either. Honestly respected by her mostly male peers and confident of her abilities she’s a multi dimensional woman at ease in a position not often held by female characters. Even when working with a strange and playful author.
Castle is a show that, even with one of those premises of ‘person with no business being a cop ends up working with the cops long term’ works pretty well , has great stories and a cast with diverse women, each strong in their own way, and has more than the token ethnic minority person too.](http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqcbfiyuGI1qlkz7so1_500.jpg)

I sometimes think Tina is overlooked by some people. She’s largely happy with who she is and learning to accept those things about her that she isn’t comfortable about just yet. Though we don’t see a lot of her, what we do see is a teenage girl growing into herself.
Mercedes gets more attention, is well known for being strong and loud even if she doesn’t always feel that way. This is Quorra. She’s from the movie ‘Tron: Legacy’. She is really awesome and really pretty.
She is a pretty strong female character in my mind, though after she rescues Sam she kinda just fades away and I have some issues about something she does at the end, but otherwise she is adorable and awesome.
Her character I think was done very well, with the childlike innocence and wonder about the world beyond the grid. I hope that when (there better be a when) there is a Tron 3 they have her in it and being awesome and kick butt. And preferably no romance between her and Sam.
I just hope she doesn’t have to wear high heels in the next film either. What was the costume designer thinking when she made all of them wear high heeled wedges? (I know it’s a woman from a behind the scenes clip I watched).](http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lqk36xyK3f1r1mqtxo1_1280.jpg)

#5: Éowyn
Before I start talking about Éowyn, I would like to say that there is almost no difference in how much I like each of my Top 5.
Now then … If the movies had more women like Éowyn, I might actually be inspired to watch more current movies than I do now.
She is just amazing. She is regal; dignified; attached to her family; and very, very strong. Although emotional at times, Éowyn does not let her emotions get the best of her, which takes a lot of admirable strength.
Even as I was reading the books, I really cared about what happened to Éowyn. She was the only woman who was a regular presence, and I really liked her. I was therefore both happy for her and jealous when I learned that she marries Faramir. (Keep in mind that Faramir was my Most Desirable Male at the time.)
Of course, the biggest reason I like Éowyn is because she kills the Witch-King. No living man can kill the Witch-King, but because Éowyn is a woman, she can, and she does. I know that without Merry, she likely would have died, but hey, at least she kills the guy. And as the Witch-King is Public Enemy No. 2 on my list of literary villains, Éowyn gains huge favor points for that.

There is way, WAY too much dude on my dash today. So I see you, people posting dudes, and raise you the flawless Claudia Black.
Let’s talk about how amazing she is. See this picture? This is a picture from Farscape. Peacekeeper Wars, to be specific. Her character, Aeryn Sun, is so controlled. So self-contained. Unlike most tough female characters who get a romance subplot (…though let’s face it, Farscape was just psychedelic scifi romance at its best, and it was not a subplot at all), Aeryn never loses her toughness. She can have this deep emotional growth and still be this amazing warrior at the same time.
I realize that’s me praising the character, but I’m always amazed again when I go back and watch Farscape. Aeryn is so full of self-control, and I never doubt that for a second. Thing is, I’ve been in the same room as Claudia Black. She’s funny, she’s warm, and she’s goofy. It’s like polar opposites. That’s how amazing she is.
